Hotmail and Loaded Attachments

I wrote this fun little blog entry many months ago to highlight a concern I had about online storage. I don't use it, but I thought about bringing this back and ask if you have a nifty supply of online megabytes at your disposal? Let me know in the comments! ^_^ I saw the end, and realized I had no idea why I added that; it was funny though.

Recently, MSN Hotmail users were given the luxury of sending friends and co-workers up to 10GB worth of data to attach to emails using their internet service. You could even send 10,000 megabytes worth of glamourous photos of you to your significant other, or if you are one of the lucky few already you can receive an equally disproportionate amount of images from your significant other. I'm not sure how I should feel about this...

For Hotmail to provide their users with this new service is quite the responsibility. Ahead of that, however, you must establish a relationship with someone so that you can afford to send 10GB of your personal, digital portraits in an email without facing possible prosecution, the end of a promising long-term relationship, and/or public embarrassment and scrutiny. She would need to be a really good friend in order to receive such a present, if looking at 10GB worth of you is her thing. As for me, my problem wouldn't be finding someone to send so many photos to. No, it is just the opposite!

What do you do when a girl you know suddenly attaches 10GB worth of pictures in an email? Note, there is nothing distasteful or embarrassing about the photos that would turn you off, because the pair of you are great friends, but to send so many professional yet unrequested photos of her in various situations would involve a high degree of trust. Now, its possible to bust the servers of Microsoft with such an email, but let's assume the transaction went well and the email is in your inbox folder. Best case scenario: You thank her for sending such wonderful photos, and you might start making some wonderful Photoshop art with them (computer screensavers, wallpapers, high-contrast portraits, Liechtenstein-inspired montages, etc.). However, she just sent you 10GB of her BEST stuff, and just a 'thank you' will not suffice! The ball is in your court to do something at least 10GB worth her effort. Worst case scenario: You don't like the photos, not because of the subject, but because they are blurry or the camera had ketchup stains on the lens or something. How do you inform her of this? Besides, do you want to see the photos she didn't send? How would she take that? She paid serious coin or spent serious time going through the photos, and now she is about to receive some bad news...!

I was never in a position to receive a gift of any kind from any woman that liked me that way. If such a woman exists, I think I would be happier with the genuine article in my arms than 10GB worth of digital photographs on my computer. My guess is, if she exists, she wouldn't send anything that would keep me plastered to the computer screen. She would probably want me to do work or something...! (Did I just type that?)

Now, for something totally random:

Hungry & End of an Era

Instead of getting dinner, I decided to write instead. Now, it's almost too late to eat anything, but I did buy soup cans from the grocery store a few hours ago...Mmm, chicken noodle with less sodium content! Oh boy!

The neighbourhood Blockbuster Video store near my house is closing. A large part of my teenage to young adult life is ending just when I consider finding a new place to live. When I asked the cashier about the closing I inserted that I was one of the first people to enter the Blockbuster store when it opened in 1995. There were many clerks, who came in went, but I was one of the constant customers that came for the candy...most of the time.

For a school project, I rented a video about the 1972 Summit Series, and when I got home I rigged two VCRs to the television, and did a half-decent editing job for my French language project about the classic series. When I rented the tape again to do some final editing, I glanced on the screen and the computer said the tape was "traced". I always wondered what that meant, and if I should look out the front window to see if men in trench coats would come to the door, haul me away into their black limousine, and take me for a ride around the city o_O Gulp...I never bothered to know what "traced" meant, and the trench coat men never came to the house.

I did rent videos from there, though...specific videos: Godzilla movies. Mind you, whenever the monster came on the screen, I dove under the couch to get away from the 'scary monsters'. With my bare feet sticking out from under the couch, my Dad would enter the room and yell for me to "stop pulling the fabric off from under there, and get out from under the couch". Years later, I noticed the GIANT zipper coming from down the back of the monsters, and since then my fear of Godzilla subsided to that of amusement at the special effects of the mid-twentieth century. I liked how grown human beings could go crazy and stomp little replicas of buildings from Tokyo, Sasebo, and Nagoya. I imagine someone put endless hours into those buildings, and railway cars, and bridges, and I can also imagine that same person crying as some transfer student from the local university in a big green bag stomped and kicked his work.

I was always a HUGE kid going to the Blockbuster store to get candy, or to play video games. I did ask the manager why MORTAL KOMBAT, which was rated M at the time, was in the video game console. She blinked, and asked "MORTAL KOMBAT is in the video game console?!" When I lost the excess weight, I went back to buy a Diet Pepsi, and another clerk asked me if I work out at the gym at the end of the strip mall. If the clerk wasn't a guy, I would probably come up with a tall, dark, and disgustingly handsome answer, but instead I told him the truth: "There is a gym at the end of this strip mall? I thought it was a dance hall!"

I'm going to miss Blockbuster, but not for any particular video, but for the people. Now, Netflix, Youtube, and other streaming sites reduce the contact customers have with the vendors who sell the films. A product of the digital immigrant age, video stores all over the continent are going out of business as digital natives stay in their caves and watch videos sent straight to their PVR or PS3 via a couple of clicks of their mouse. My experience at the Blockbuster on the corner of Mavis & Eglinton is one I will take with me for the rest of my life...or at least until I have to return it.

Lazy Saturday, Even at Wembley

This is for a fellow I know from England who is a Liverpool supporter; he's a very nice guy, and he knows a lot about English football. I never met a Liverpool supporter, who is ACTUALLY from England, before this past month. I went to Old Trafford many years ago, and ran into United supporters there at the stadium and the shopping centre nearby. They seem very self-assured like things will always be this way; I imagine they felt that way back in 1968 as well?

What do you do when your Dad is yelling at the players on the television? The UEFA Champions League final was today. Manchester United, who finished runners-up a year ago and are league champions during this year's campaign for a record nineteenth time, played against Spanish champions FC Barcelona at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The last time United played a European Cup final at the Twin Towers they defeated Benfica in extra-time in 1968, thanks to Sir Matt Busby and his "Busby Babes", Sir Bobby Charlton, and the late George Best.

(I thought you were going to salute Liverpool?)

Well, this year didn't turn out so great for Sir Alex and his United side as Messi, David Villa, and the rest of the spunky Barcelona side tore them up 3-1. While on the surface it doesn't look like something was torn to pieces, Barca held the initiative for most of the contest as Messi's ball possession and sharp runs from the midfield left United defenders indecisive and confused. David Villa's insurance marker in the 77th minute (?) put the contest beyond doubt for Barca and UEFA crowned them with their fourth European Cup championship.

Meanwhile, back at the house, I could hear Dad get progressively louder from the other room. I was in the kitchen eating lobster bisque, while with each passing minute, Dad's groans and exhortations for his Manchester United grew louder and louder. This is unusual seeing as he only gets this angry whenever his "one and only" son does something bad, and out of the twenty things I did wrong so far that day I didn't know such a good team could play so badly that my Dad would want to put his shoe through the television.

I imagine next year in the English Premier League my Dad will be just as upset with United as he was today. Liverpool have new ownership, Kenny Dalglish returned as manager of the club, an academy full of fresh talent, and quality players like Carragher, Gerrard, Carroll, and Suarez to make the Reds a formidable league opponent. Albeit they lost their last two games of the season, but when they are in form they can beat anybody - even Manchester United, and my Dad will not like that.

I wrote about watching Dalglish play and manage Liverpool when I was a lad on my soccer blog. If you are interested in catching up on some history, here is a link to that posting.

Victoria Night Posting

Happy Victoria Day everyone, and to my friends in the United States have a great Memorial Day. Big thanks to our Canadian and American military servicemen and women for their sacrifice in that we can enjoy the freedoms we have.

My sister is driving back here after visiting friends in the United States. It is late, and she is overdue by more than a few hours. I hope everything is fine; weather around here isn't the best in the world, and the scattered thunderstorms made raking and mowing the lawn rather difficult. Nevertheless, my younger sister is still out there somewhere, and we are all a little more than concerned at this point.

Listening to 'Hari and Aino' ^_^ That usually calms me down and makes me smile. When I hear their songs, I think about driving down the coast of California, through Los Angeles, and the beaches towards the south. Then I found out they are from Sweden...cough cough...!

...Fireworks! o_O Phil, stop daydreaming; get back to work!

I have another baseball game tomorrow. The diamond is nearby, so after I return home from work I can get dressed, and walk to my next game. We haven't won yet, but I have a good feeling about the next game. I'll try to stick to outfield duty this time, and wear my ROYALS gear.

Wish me luck ^_^ Hopefully, I won't bust my ankle again like I did in the last game, and in the game before that... o_O

A Quick Follow Up

My ankle is not so HUGE, but my walk is improving. My next game is next Tuesday at a nearby park; please pray I don't injure it again. Maybe I'll stick to outfield duty for the game; infield isn't much fun since I discovered I was playing it wrong.

I was in the mall and I saw a couple of people from Owen Sound wearing T-shirts that let everyone know they are supporting their hometown's junior hockey team, which was in town for the big ice hockey tournament (if you would like to know what I'm talking about, click here, and then come back!)

I need to buy a USB stick so I can transfer information from my computer to my PS3. I received an email not too long ago from Sony asking me to change my password. I followed the URL to a grey page telling me the site was still down -_- Things like this make me want to buy an XBOX 360: This way I can bother my buddies Andrew and Bryan into playing "Portal 2" with me (Hi Andrew. Hi Bryan.).

I'm listening to Todd Rundgren's "Initiation" album right now. Like the electronica song at the end, I'm all over the place mentally right now.

I'm off to tweet from Wal-Mart...and Starbucks. Bye!

My Ankle EXPLODED!

Before and after I play a game of baseball, or in this case "slo-pitch", I shower. It rained all afternoon, and there wasn't time to shower before my game. I figured I would get enough of a shower during, and I did.

What do you do when you are losing by a giant score, and the other team continues to hit homeruns and take extra bases? I play in a social league during the spring here in Mississauga, so when teams run up the score it can be difficult to take. In my life, I experienced the event on both sides, and while you should always try your best and compete there comes a time when you should dial it down. The defense to that would be if you gave an inch, the opponent will take the lead! That happened to a friend of mine last year, when he sat on the bench in the last inning and watched what once was a safe 25-run lead evaporate in less than a half hour of mistake-filled baseball. The competitor inside me would run on the field, against my coach's wishes, and like Luongo coming in for Brodeur shut the door, kill the rally, and end the game! My friend felt the same way, except when he told me that story he was smiling...?

All you can do is your best, no matter which side you are on. I changed my batting stance to mimic Jose Bautista: Bat over my head, left heel up, arms up, looking straight at the ball. For once, I made contact; at all three plate appearances, as a matter of fact. Finally, there were no holes in my swing, yet in my first two at-bats I came over the top of the ball. Perhaps it was the rain, or my eagerness, but I hit sharp grounders each time. Nevertheless, I ran hard - too hard, and beat out each throw. Finishing 3-or-3 with one run scored is good, but the satisfaction of doing exceedingly better what you thought you could, in spite of the difficult situation, is better. INSERT GRATUITOUS JOSE BAUTISTA HIGHLIGHT HERE:

I came home after the game, and my Mom's first question was if we won the game. Later, after I dried off and tossed my dirty white baseball pants in the washing machine with detergent and a cup's worth of Oxy Clean, I said we did not. I echo the refrain of most of my teammates when I say it would be nice to win, and while it is NEVER alright to lose you can learn just as much if not more about character and pride in performance. I also learned who is super competitive on my team, and who not to approach after a game when they are miles ahead of everyone else on the walkway back to the parking lot o_O I don't want to name any names, but it is good to have people to care just a little bit more so to keep things in perspective; at least are getting better.

Then there are those that are a little miffed at the scoreline: If Don Cherry was there, he would be appalled, too. I had the opportunity to coach a summer league team last year, and I warned my team against running up scores because somehow "the Karma of the Game" returns the favour in kind. If it was another sport like hockey, football, or basketball I would take exception, but there is little you can do aside from doing your best to mitigate individual achievement. Their team hit the ball well all game; you shrug it off, and move on. Most importantly, it's a social league: If it was the end of the world, I might care a little bit more about what was happening on the field. I'm going to work tomorrow with a swollen ankle, a runny nose, and possible pneumonia, and I will forget everything the day before took place. What remains with you is the character and willpower you require each and every day. Right, Jose Bautista? ^_^

Oh, by the way, I took a ball off my right ankle. It is quite swollen, and all attempts to keep it elevated and refrain from walking around on it failed o_O

If you wish to help with my swollen ankle, send money and various forms of PayPal credit to use on shop.mlb.com to my email address so I can purchase much needed personalized, authentic Major League Baseball gear. I must finish collecting ROYALS and PIRATES gear, and start acquiring ANGELS and ATHLETICS paraphernalia. Thanks! ^_^

Sad News

Some of you may know Brittani Louise Taylor from her YouTube channel. I wrote some time ago about how I found her comedy videos, and her upbeat and positive attitude. She is one of my favourite people, and whenever I'm feeling down I usually watch some of her videos like "FEAR" or her weekly "SHOUT OUT SUNDAY" videos.

Well, during this past week, her father passed away from cancer. I know this because when she didn't upload another SHOUT OUT video yesterday there was an announcement on YouTube and Twitter (?) her dad passed on.

I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to Brittani and her family. Thank you Brittani for always putting a smile on my face; may God bless you and comfort you during this time.

What Makes Me Laugh, Part 5

Well, this doesn't make me LAUGH, but it does make me smile watching this.

I like good music, so when I recently discovered Todd Rundgren on iTunes, I found another easy listening and rock and roll artist to play alongside James Taylor and America tracks in Shuffle mode. I also have Daryl Hall, who was the "Hall" in the famous duo "Hall & Oates", music in my iPod as well, and while I'm not big on him I do enjoy Daryl Hall songs.

Last week, I was shuffling through Todd Rundgren videos on YouTube when I crossed paths with a series of videos done by Daryl Hall from his House! Apparently, it was a BIG series featuring Daryl Hall, and a collection of visitors like Todd Rundgren, Rob Thomas, and Chromeo all coming together to sing each other's songs! I enjoyed the videos very much, and of the bunch I decided to show you one of my favourites:

Alright, here are some more: The collaboration is really great ^_^

PHIL LOVES PORTAL 2

If you play Portal 2, either on PS3 or XBOX 360, with a person that never played the game before or plays badly, is it possible to have TWICE the amount of fun than you would have with a person who is an expert gamer?

When I bought Portal 2 earlier this week, I tried enlisting some of my friends to play with me in the Co-operative Mode. "Co-op mode" is fancy for 2 player mode, so don't get too flustered.

I don't usually get excited over video games...maybe Power Pros. Unlike Power Pros, where I throw my Wii controller and shout at the television after being called out on strikes for suspect breaking balls outside the strike zone, I can see the enormous replay value with this game.

Who knows, maybe my future bosslady would want to play Portal 2 with me, too! Well, maybe not; I'll just ask my friends first.

Serious Stuff

Should we be celebrating? Americans and free thinking freedom lovers the world over 'celebrated' the death of terrorist and Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden this week. When news of his death reached cities like New York and Washington, its citizens took to the street in jubilant celebration. Don't believe me? Have a look at one video from the streets...

Already, numerous conspiracy theorists clogged YouTube with videos about Osama's true whereabouts, and pro-American affiliations! Some sources even claim he was a pawn in the 9/11 scheme to galvanize support behind then U.S. President George W. Bush. Nevertheless, in the aftermath of Osama bin Laden's death, I am concerned for two reasons.

  1. With Osama out of the way, his 'martyrdom' for 'the cause' will inspire future generations to stand against the West. All the unanswered questions behind 9/11, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Al-Qaeda will become part of the new religion believing the spirit of Osama isn't really dead, but living in the guns and steel his followers who take up his mission. Scary stuff, I know.
  2. I remember watching old films of the home cities of the Allied forces taking to the street upon Victory in Europe, and then Victory in Japan. They celebrated not just the end of the world, but the preservation of democracy throughout the free world. Now, in 2011, videos of Americans celebrating the death of a figurehead of an international anarchist movement flood YouTube and various news media. The celebration is not because anything was protected or maintained, but because someone died. How sad we find joy as the blood of Osama and the unanswered questions run through our hands. That would be similar to the British people celebrating the death of Adolf Hitler at the hands of his generals in 1944, all the while Rommel would direct the Nazi German war machine! The war isn't over, and things could possibly get worse.
Figuratively speaking, the previous decade began on September 11, 2001, and ended May 1, 2011 when the news of Osama bin Laden's death was first reported. As we enter the next decade, what will we see from the West, and what will we see from the terrorists. What Osama did in death what he could never do in life: He scared me out of my mind.
